The (in)comparable in the European Literatures. I dedicate this text to Professor Elena Siupiur, the famous researcher in Bulgarian and Balkan studies. In addition to being faithful wives, mothers, and educators of the nation's warriors, women are also Muses, called to protect human life not only biologically, but also culturally – as creators of fragmentary memories about the little man involved in great historical events. At the same time, it represents a kind of women's resistance to war. The woman's point of view is that of the internal alternative (or ‘domestic’) front, which is inevitably part of the phenomenon of total war. For the purpose of comparative analysis, we connect two mythological images – of Echo and the Muses, which embody the cultural paradigm imposed by historical development on the silence of the female voice, but also the female word-creating nature. Writers such as Gabriela Adameșteanu (Romania) and Blaga Dimitrova (Bulgaria) problematize traditional female roles, turning their novels (“Wasted Morning” and “The Last Judgement”) into a kind of museum-structured voice novel (as a specific type of novel) between sound and silence, public and personal, authentic and imaginary, past and present, continuity and discontinuity, myth and history.
